I'm 6'2, 160lbs. Probably never going to be super shredded. I don't care. I started working out for the mental distraction (can't think about porn when your quads are screaming at you to stop doing squats) and the physical time it takes up during my day. Another benefit, I'm physically exhausted after working 8-10hrs, and coming home to workout for 2hrs. I don't even have energy to watch Netflix. I literally go straight to sleep, and have a pretty damn restful night's sleep.
Here are a few more benefits of working out:
- It gives you time to explore new podcasts and binge some of your favorite albums
- It makes you less lazy - somehow you don't see doing laundry as a mountainous chore, you just knock it out and keep moving
- It gives your mind time to wander. There's something about your brain being on autopilot in the background while you're working out - it just helps you mentally sort things out and come out with a fresh perspective on a lot of things.
You will have to find a routine that works for you, so I'm not going to waste your time going over my routine. I will say, the biggest thing is consistency. Don't start working out guns blazing, thinking you'll come out looking like The Rock. You'll burn out. I did this, several times. Just ease into it. It's better to do a 1hr workout 3x a week, than a 3hr workout once a week.
Start with a couple days/nights a week and get into the habit. The first 2 weeks will absolutely suck. Force yourself through it. There's something oddly rewarding about doing something hard, when you don't want to. You get a sense of accomplishment. Get past the first couple weeks, and your body will adjust. After a month or so, you'll begin to look forward to working out, as crazy as that sounds.
Last thing on working out: another benefit I wasn't expecting and didn't even think about - the more consistent you are in working out, the more you start to believe in yourself. Each time you workout after a long day at work or before taking the kids to school, you're proving to yourself that you can do something hard. And if you can do one thing that's hard, you start to realize you can do other difficult things, too. Like, quitting porn.
